This Week's App: KnightLab Projects
What is KnightLab Projects?
KnightLab Projects was created by a community of designers, developers, students, and educators who all worked in journalism and wanted to push the field into new spaces. While they have done several things, we want to highlight the interactive tools they created that help you better communicate data and tell a story.
What can it be used for?
KnightLab Projects has created several interactive tools that help show data or tell a story in a more engaging way. This means you could use this tool to create more engaging elements for presentations or even for your fully online courses. The follow options are the tools they currently offer.
- [Juxtapose](https://juxtapose.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*2f51jx*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NDQ3MS4wLjAuMA..) - Juxtapose helps storytellers compare two pieces of similar media, including photos, and GIFs. It’s ideal for highlighting then/now stories that explain slow changes over time (growth of a city skyline, regrowth of a forest, etc.) or before/after stories that show the impact of single dramatic events (natural disasters, protests, wars, etc.).
- [VR Scene](https://scene.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*io9on1*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NDk5NC4wLjAuMA..) - VR Scene is an engaging way to tell stories from an entirely new perspective. It turns your collection of panoramic and VR-ready photos into a slideshow of navigable scenes, allowing you to create unique 360° narratives. A simple-to-use editor allows you to order your photos, add descriptions and add text. Your stories can then easily be embedded and viewed anywhere using simple and intuitive controls. Best of all, because it runs entirely in your browser, your stories can be viewed on desktop, mobile devices and even the most popular VR devices without the need for any extra apps or plugins.
- [Soundcite](https://soundcite.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*1ga6b6j*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NTA2My4wLjAuMA..) - Audio is a powerful device that can add emotion or context to a story. Unfortunately audio clips force uncomfortable choices: read or listen, but not both. Until now. SoundCite is a simple-to-use tool that lets you add inline audio to your story. With this tool you could describe something and where audio is needed add that right into the text itself.
- [Storyline](https://storyline.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*1pri4lh*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NTEzOS4wLjAuMA..) - Storyline is an open-source tool that enables anyone to build an annotated, interactive line chart. With this tool you could easily display data with interactive descriptions attached that wont overwhelm your students.
- [StoryMap](https://storymap.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*boarkp*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NTI0OS4wLjAuMA..) - This helps you tell stories on the web that highlight the locations of a series of events. Imagine being able to present information on an interactive map, this is exactly what this tool helps you do.
- [Timeline](https://timeline.knightlab.com/?_gl=1*an7o6r*_ga*MTc3NDc2NjMxOC4xNjkwMzM0MzA4*_ga_8F4WPDMPL5*MTY5MjA1NDAwNS40LjEuMTY5MjA1NTM1OS4wLjAuMA..) - This tool enables anyone to build visually rich, interactive timelines with nothing more than a google spreadsheet. You can add text, images, and video to your timelines to create a rich story.
How do I get started?
To get started go to KnightLab Projects Storytelling Page and then click on the tool you want to use. Each tool page has clear guidance on what the tool does and how you can get started using it.
When you are ready to use a tool then, just click on the green make button to get started.
