This Week's App: Twitch

What is Twitch?

Twitch is a live streaming tool for content from gaming, sports, music, entertainment, and more. People from all over the world come together to watch content, chat, interact and produce their own content. It most notably grew in popularity because of people streaming themselves playing video games, but Twitch has also been growing in use for education.

What can it be used for?

Twitch is a great tool for sharing live media content, which means it can be a great tool for teaching in a virtual setting. Twitch allows you to share live video content with a great live chat system that allows for those watching to engage with you as you go.

Now one might be asking why not just use Zoom? While Zoom can do something like this, Twitch provides a unique chat system that allows for a range of reactions that allow students to have fun and interact without feeling like they have to unmute themselves. The biggest aspect of their chat system is the wide variety of emotes that allow for much more expression than Zoom. This tool would be great for those looking to teach a skill as it allows them to provide live examples and allows you to easily see questions from your students. You could use it to show examples, run labs, run activities, and more.

How do I get started?

First, go to twitch.tv and sign up for a Twitch account. We recommend checking out some of the content on twitch to get an idea of what content looks like on there.

Once you set up your account you will want to select the software you want to use to stream to Twitch. There are several free options, we recommend checking out the Quick Start Guide to Streaming on Twitch to learn more.

Finally, after you have set up your streaming software and connected it to your twitch account you can start testing what streaming looks like. Then try teaching a lesson from the tool to see how it goes. All you need to do is share your channel link with your students and have them join you.
