What is WordPress?

WordPress is a freemium Content Management System (CMS) that enables the user to create a website for any purpose they can imagine. The free product line allows you to make a website at yourdomainname.wordpress.com. This gives you or your students the chance to make a space for themselves to contain anything you can assign.

What can it be used for?

Simply enough, you could use WordPress to make a blog, a catalog, a portfolio, a store, or any other front-facing site of choice.

The first goal would be to determine what you want your students to create. Knowing that they'll get the authentic practice of making a website, you can get them going on the process of fulfilling your learning objectives.

How do I get started?

Try it out yourself: make your first website, either a professional portfolio or work out an example of what you will assign your students.

You can get started by following the WordPress Get Going Fast: Checklist.

Then plan out your activites: once you have created a website or example of what you want, start to plan out your activites. Think about what they are creating and how you could maybe break it out into chunks. We like to create an activity for getting their site set up and then move to content creation.

Write clear instructions: make sure to give your students room to be creative, but provide them access to resources that can help them learn how to use the tool. The Quickstart checklist linked above is great for that. Remember you want them to have room to make it their own, but don't want the tool to become a hurdle itself.
