This Week's App: **Hypothes.is**

What is Hypothesis?

Hypothesis, stylized with their website URL as Hypothes.is, is a social annotation tool for the web. What does that even mean—well, if you can read it, you can highlight it and leave a comment for any other Hypothesis user to read. A website that was once a one-way street becomes a public square for commentary and feedback.

What can it be used for?

For educational purposes, it's great that you can have your students annotate any website or PDF you want. Hypothesis has features that allow you to group the students together, too, so that you can keep your students' comments private.

You could have your student collaboratively annotate a text or reading, annotate a website in a design class to identify different design elements, or even have students take collaborative notes on a reading or text.

Basically if it is on the internet you can have your students annotate directly on it, collaborate together, reply to each other, and share ideas with each other directly on text or website. To learn more about ways this can be used check out these Examples of Classrooms using the tool.

How do I get started?

Hypothesis is a browser extension . Download it for your browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and get going. We recommend first going to their Get Started: Hypothesis page to get going.

If you have the option, you can integrate it into your Learning Management System (LMS) but you'll need to connect with your local admin. For more help, check out the Hypothesis Help Center.

Could collaborative annotations enhance or transform an activity?

Once you have decided how you are going to use it or get started, we recommend then taking a look at activities where you already have students evaluating, reading, or discussing content. Could collaborative annotations enhance or transform one of those experiences? If it could try using the tool with just one of those activities and build from there.
