This Week's App: AnswerGarden

What is AnswerGarden?

AnswerGarden is an easy, and free, to use web app that will let you auto-magically (that's right: automatic magic) create a Word Cloud from student responses. Most word cloud tools require you to input all of the content, but AnswerGarden lets you create a prompt that the students respond to. As they answer the question, each word or small phrase is added to the word cloud. As they answer the question, each word or small phrase is added to the word cloud.

With a class full of responses, your insights into what the students are thinking about your prompt become quickly evident.

What can it be used for?

Word clouds are simple technology: they count the frequency of responses and make the most frequent responses into big words on screen. If frequency of response is the key to how they work, then that is also the benefit we want to cultivate in the classroom. Ask any question and quickly find out how your students are thinking or feeling on the matter.

Ask any question and quickly find out how your students are thinking or feeling on the matter.

Consider these two questions: which year did the Civil War start; how are you feeling about last week's test? In each of these questions are opportunities to learn about your students' retention (hopefully you see one BIG 1861) or about their emotional response to what you thought might have been an easy test but actually felt quite heavy to your students. This is a formative tool and we hope it helps you learn more about your students through and through.

How do I get started?

Easy! Head to answergarden.ch and make your first question.

There are no payments or required accounts: simply put in a topic, choose your garden mode (helpful for classrooms that might need some moderation), set your answer length (20 or 40 characters), and set a password and email if you want to be able to track the garden you make down the line.

Each garden can be used once or multiple times, but remember that if you lose the link or close out of the garden, you might lose it altogether.

Since they're so simple and free, there aren't many administrative features to help you manage lots of gardens.

Good luck tending your AnswerGardens!
