This Week's App: Readwise

What is Readwise?

Readwise is a tool that allows someone to save important quotes or highlights from ebooks, articles, and physical books all into one place. It sounds to good to be true, we know, but it is real. Readwise is an app that allows you sync highlights from Kindle, Instapaper, Pocket, iBooks, and more into your online app tools like Notion, Evernote, and Obsidian with physical highlights you make in physical books.

Once you do this it allows you to also categorize all these highlights and then also has a review feature that will automatically bring back up important quotes you want to review later into a daily curated review.

What can it be used for?

Readwise is a powerful tool that can help you curate important information from multiple resources into one place. While this has many uses, in education we see this as a powerful app that students or professors could use to curate information from resources to utilize in class or for study. Josh has been using it in his class to save highlights from the textbook in his class each week so he can share them with his students in the weekly discussions they have. It makes curation much easier to do and organize.

The other advantage of Readwise is their “Daily Readwise”, this feature allows Readwise to daily send you important quotes for you to review. This is a great technique for learning information so Readwise could be a great tool to help facilitate this review and recall technique with your students.

How do I get started?

Unfortunately Readwise is not a free tool, but you can try it out for free so we first recommend going to Readwise’s Website to set up a test account. If you want to try the full paid system for a free month you can also sign up with Josh’s unique invite link. From there you will want to follow these two simple steps.

  1. Connect your ebook tools - Connecting your ebook tools are how you import highlights into readwise. You can learn more about that here.
  2. Connect your notes tool - Connecting your notes tools are how you get those highlights out into organized pages. You can learn more about that here.
